The shed typology is primarily a utilitarian one a storage building varying in scale from the domestic garden shed to a industrial depot. As well as the ability to provide storage, typically all shed structures are characterised by their lightness of construction and their assembly from component parts. In the recent past the domestic shed has also become a place of refuge from the home – a place for solitary contemplation and relaxation as well as work. The intention of this proposal is to create a new outbuilding for the maltings that provides a creative studio atmosphere that is warm, comfortable, light-filled and highly flexible. It is also characterised by its simple construction from readily available, low cost materials. The shed is a top-lit lightweight structure formed from laminated shuttering ply and structured multiwall polycarbonate sheets form the infill panels.
