Positioned at the junction of Wick Road, Cassland Road, and Hedgers Grove, the Selman & Wellday Garages site marks a key urban node within the Gascoyne Estate and the wider Hackney Wick Ward. Framed by midcentury slab blocks and civic buildings, the site currently lacks permeability and presents a defensive edge to the street — a result of fragmented post-war planning.
The proposal introduces two interconnected six-storey blocks, aligned east–west to reflect the local grain and respond to the geometry of Wick Road and the existing tree line. Stepped in plan, the buildings define a central landscaped courtyard, offering a protected communal space and greater separation to Wellday House, while new planting along Wick Road strengthens the street’s identity.
A consistent brick language articulated through buttresses, deepset punched openings, and expressed lintels lends the scheme a robust, industrial character. Inverted pitched gables subtly reference vernacular rooflines, while a ramped colonnade marks the entrance. The scheme delivers 22 social rent homes in a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom units, fostering intergenerational living and neighbourly connection.
